Jonny Bairstow has broken his lengthy silence on his controversial stumping during the second Ashes Test at Lord’s and accused Australia of gamesmanship when taking contentious catches in the drawn series tantan
Bairstow was at the centre of the incident which ignited the Ashes, when Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey opportunistically stumped the England batsman after he had stepped out of his crease at the end of an over tantan
The umpire had not called “over” and so Bairstow was given out by the rules of the game tantan
But England accused their rivals of failing to play within the spirit of cricket, and captain Ben Stokes later said that he would have retracted the appeal had he been in the position of his counterpart, Pat Cummins tantan
On reflection, Carey later said he had no regrets over the incident and would do it again tantan
“If there was an opportunity to get a stumping, I definitely would tantan
To see how much has played out since then it’s been a little bit surprising tantan
There’s been some nasty stuff been said but it is the Ashes – there was nasty stuff said before that as well tantan
”But speaking to the Daily Telegraph, Bairstow said he was not “fair game” as he was not trying to gain an advantage by stepping out of his crease tantan
“If you’re starting out of your crease, you’re trying to gain an advantage,” he said tantan
“If you start in your crease, and not trying to take a run, and you finish in your crease tantan
tantan
tantan
That’s the bit – if you try to gain an advantage, then it’s fair game tantan
But if you’re starting in your crease, you’ve ducked, tap, tap, scratched tantan
I’ve even dragged my bat, looked up, and then gone tantan
“I’ve never seen it happen from someone starting in their crease tantan
I don’t think you want that filtering down into kids’ cricket tantan
Look at the Mankads and everything like that tantan
You want young kids to be out there batting and having fun, not thinking about whether the fielders might do this or that tantan
“It might tarnish people’s enjoyment of the game that we’re trying to get kids into tantan
You want to be out there batting and bowling, rather than thinking about the 11 different ways you can get someone out tantan
”Several of Australia’s players have since poked fun at Bairstow over the stumping tantan
In interviews for The Grade Cricketer, Mitchell Marsh and Usman Khawaja claimed some of Bairstow’s England teammates were laughing with Australia’s players as Bairstow refused to eat lunch after the incident tantan
And Marnus Labuschagne described a “steaming” Bairstow in the dining room after the stumping tantan
He recalled: “The Sky crew (broadcasters) knew that Jonny was in there, and they just replayed it on the screen tantan
And, as you do, everyone’s watching tantan
Obviously, seeing us all watch, he’s like, ‘Are you guys happy with that?’“David Warner is spitting out his chicken, and goes, ‘Yeah, very’ tantan
”Bairstow has also suggested Australia were deceitful in the way they went about trying to convince umpires they had made clean catches tantan
“There’s conjecture around everything,” he said tantan
“Fingers underneath the ball when the ball’s still touching the ground tantan
Celebrating when the ball has touched the ground tantan
Marnus [Labuschagne] celebrated at Edgbaston at short leg tantan
Then the one that Rooty [Joe Root] fell to at Lord’s, when [Steve Smith] said his fingers were underneath the ball tantan
However, they were splayed widely tantan
But that was given out, that’s fine – it’s part and parcel of the game and the decisions the umpires give tantan
”Bairstow is currently part of the England one-day side struggling at the Cricket World Cup and on the verge of elimination tantan
England next play Sri Lanka on Thursday in Bangalore tantan

Max Verstappen defied Lewis Hamilton to win a cat-and-mouse United States Grand Prix at a sizzling Circuit of the Americas in Austin tantan
Verstappen has been on easy street this season, but the triple world champion was made to fight for the 50th win of his career – becoming only the fifth driver to reach a half-century tantan
Indeed, at one stage, Hamilton dared to dream of ending a losing streak which stands at 686 days and counting tantan
Yet, as so often been the case this year, Verstappen’s speed in his all-conquering Red Bull machine came to the fore tantan
Verstappen joins Hamilton (103 wins), Michael Schumacher (91), Sebastian Vettel (53) and Alain Prost (51) in the half-century club tantan
“To win my 50th career win makes me very proud and we will try to push for me,” said Verstappen tantan
He moved ahead of Lando Norris on lap 28 of 56 to all but seal the win tantan
Hamilton might bemoan a questionable strategy decision which saw him lose 10 seconds to Verstappen in the opening round of pit stops tantan
But in reality, he probably did not have the pace to stop the Dutchman from claiming his 15th win from the 18 rounds so far tantan
He crossed the line an agonising 2 tantan
2 sec behind Verstappen with Norris hanging on to the final spot on the podium tantan
Hamilton could count himself unfortunate to drop from third to fourth at the start tantan
The seven-time world champion enjoyed a decent getaway, but he was blocked by Norris under braking allowing Sainz to sneak through tantan
Norris had seen off pole-sitter Leclerc with a lunge at the first bend to assume top spot tantan
As Norris set about building a lead – already two seconds clear of Leclerc at the end of the second lap – Hamilton set about passing both scarlet cars tantan
First up was Sainz tantan
Hamilton used the tow to latch on to the back of Ferrari on the 210mph drag to Turn 12, and, assisted by DRS, drew alongside Sainz before sliding underneath the Spaniard tantan
On the following lap, Verstappen, who started in sixth after his pole lap in qualifying was chalked off for exceeding track limits, relegated Sainz another place when he made his move at the same corner tantan
Hamilton has won six times across the Pond – with five of those victories here in Austin – and the 38-year-old required only two laps to swat Leclerc aside for second tantan
Deeper on the brakes at Turn 12, Hamilton sailed round the outside of the Monegasque at the left-hander, with Norris now three seconds up the road tantan
Behind, and Verstappen was not finding it as easy to make progress tantan
He was stuck behind Leclerc for an additional five laps before finally making his move on the Monegasque tantan
He trailed Norris by seven seconds, and Hamilton by four tantan
In the Mercedes garage, Prince Harry cut a pensive figure as he gnawed at his fingernails tantan
The Duke of Sussex has been something of lucky charm for Hamilton tantan
He was a guest of Mercedes when Hamilton secured his second title in the 2014 season decider in Abu Dhabi, leading the congratulations to his fellow Briton on the radio tantan
Verstappen was the first in for new rubber at the end of lap 16 with Norris stopping the next time round tantan
But Hamilton stayed out tantan
Were Mercedes attempting a one-stopper? Hamilton did not seem convinced tantan
Asked if he could complete another five laps on his current set of tyres, Hamilton replied: “I am not sure, man tantan
It is pretty tough tantan
”Hamilton then locked up before his race engineer Peter Bonnington was back on the intercom to inform Hamilton that Verstappen – who on new tyres had just lapped three seconds faster than the Briton – was now likely to gazump him when he eventually stopped tantan
“No s***, man,” yelled Hamilton tantan
“I am struggling out here tantan
”You have given me a hell of a gap to closeLewis Hamilton on the team radioOn lap 20, in came Hamilton, and a slow front-right tyre change added to his woes by costing him a needless second tantan
When Hamilton emerged from the pits, he had dropped to third, five seconds adrift of Verstappen tantan
“I came out so far behind,” he said with a hint of dejection tantan
When the opening stops were completed, Norris led Verstappen by 2 tantan
4 sec with Hamilton 7 tantan
5 off the lead tantan
By virtue of taking on another set of mediums, Verstappen had to stop again, but Norris and Hamilton – now both on the hards – could, if their rubber allowed, go all the way to the end tantan
Hamilton, failing to make any inroads and sensing his best chance of ending a 22-month winning streak had faded, expressed his frustrations tantan
“You have given me a hell of a gap to close,” he said tantan
On lap 28, Verstappen dived underneath Norris for the lead at Turn 12 tantan
Norris had a nibble back at the Red Bull heading into the ensuing right hander, but he failed to make it stick tantan
The question now was whether Norris, and indeed Hamilton – now less than five seconds off the lead – could make their tyres last tantan
The answer arrived on lap 34 when Norris dived in for a fresh set of boots tantan
Verstappen followed in on lap 35, and despite, a slow left-rear tyre change, retained his position ahead of Norris tantan
Three laps later and Hamilton was in, changing to the faster medium compound tantan
Hamilton had the bit tantan between his teeth and within 10 laps he was crawling all over the back of Norris’ McLaren tantan
Norris slung his McLaren to the inside on the entry to the first corner in a move to stop Hamilton, but the older Brit gained tantan better traction out of the corner to slingshot by in his Mercedes tantan
Verstappen was five seconds ahead and Hamilton started to reel his old nemesis in only to run out of laps tantan
Sainz took fourth ahead of Sergio Perez with Leclerc sixth and George Russell seventh for Mercedes tantan
